The 3D Couch Potato

For those old enough to remember those dinky little blue-and-red paper glasses, kudos to you. You’ve suffered through the infant stages of the ever popular 3D technology existing in our entertainment industry. But lo and behold, the infant stages have passed; and the world has now entered in an adult stage, ripe with rippling muscles and tendons that could bend steel. Just head to your local theater for some of those blockbusters that have been released lately (“Toy Story 3,” “Clash of the Titans,” “A Christmas Carol,” etc.). 3D is definitely a worthwhile premium these days.

If you ever looked at those glasses they hand out these days, you’ll know why. They’re not made of paper. And they’re easier on your eyes. Moreover, the real advancement in this technology is what the article dubs the quintessential “3D Couch Potato.”

What is that, you ask? 3D has gotten so popular, folks, that not only will you find it in theaters today at an overwhelming percentage, but for a hefty price, you can actually purchase 3D TVs now along with the specially made circular polarized or LCD shutter glasses that wipe out those old blue-and-red three-legged colts. These new contenders are the stallions of 3D technology.

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Mitsubishi are the heavy hitters out there currently, demo’ing DLP HDTVs, plasma HDTVs, and LCD HDTVs that are all 3D capable. Microsoft has even also announced the probable goal of birthing the real rise of 3D right in gaming, particularly in the XBOX 360—with many speculating that the very first 3D game will actually be “Avatar” (game adaptation of the famous James Cameron film). Pretty fitting, actually.

It’s a ticket sales booster, and a clever way to entertain audiences. A few DVDs and Blu-Rays even introduce 3D viewing options (however, without the inclusion of 3D glasses). Is it any wonder that 3D technology is skyrocketing? And you know what? Even the good ol’ “couch potatoes” are reaching the heavens.
