This has got to be the biggest amount of crap ever.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/990817-000008.html

It seems despite the fact that the Athlon beats the other CPUs in every category they are tested in - the "Win mark Lite99" still puts it behind. Hmmm.

This time The Register is just taking the piss.

Man, I am so sick of the Register. I hate that waste of web space almost more than I hate Intel execs. The guys over there need to learn how to run a REAL news site, instead of that biased load of warm crap they serve up on a daily basis. Them and ZDnet.

You sound a bit fanatic here... The Brits have always had a bit weird sense of humour. And besides, the good always win in the end. Right?

PS. No, I'm not and intel fan, I have the whole series of K6s: K6-233, K6-2-266 and K6-III-400. So there.

That's because you don't understand your own humour... Well, I'm sorry, but I had to say that...

And to keep you happy, anything from intel or places close to it is crap. Happier now? How on earth could a crappy Celeron beat THE processor, the benchmarks must be intel optimized...

The Celery also creamed the P3. I do believe that something is definately amiss here. It *might* have something to do with the on-die cache, perhaps? I didn't see a K6-III on there, did you?
By the way, I reeeeally like the new user status.

Well, one thing that has to be said about this benchmark, is that it is really a benchmark of prive/performance, and the high cost of the Athlon, brings its stellar performance way down where the worms are.
we're talking a processor a tenth of the cost, can work far better than a tenth of the performance of an Athlon.

You are assuming that there is a linear dependency between price and performance, which never existed in the history of CPUs.

Higher grade speed bin output is usually much rarer at a given time than that of a low speed bin (yield), while demand is higher for high-end parts than for low-end ones (you want the fastest machine, not the slowest money can buy), this leads to a higher price at the top end that is not in a linear relationship to the clock speed.

Of course this makes a highly overclockable low-end chip look much better if you then apply a linear scale where rather an pseudo-exponential scale based upon historic data should be applied to gauge the priceworthiness in historical context - I think the Athlon 500 would be very favourably placed there.
