Okay, spit it out! Who did this? It looks like the memory 'OPEC' countries have been naughty towards us. The price for 64MB DIMMs has gone up from $55 to $125 here in Finland during the last two months. When I purchased a 64MB DIMM in December it did cost $105. And then they are worried about the oil price going up a few percents. Usually computer stuff prices go down not up. Nowadays memory looks like a good investment... How much have the prices increased in other parts of the world? Anyone? PS. Would anyone like to buy a 64MB DIMM for $100? IP: Logged |

This may be the first time since I own computers that they gained value <G> I bought 128 MB PC100 for the SMP machine at 229 marks (and 128 before that for 189) and now the same stick goes for *drumroll* 509 marks. Even PC133 is 10 marks cheaper now, go figure! IP: Logged |

Hmm, maybe they are pushing us towards PC133... Todays prices are 790mk ($140) for 64MB, 1390mk ($250) for 128MB and 2490mk ($445) for 256MB. The 64MB stick rose 100mk from yesterdays price... PS. And I went through all the trouble converting FIMs into USDs... IP: Logged |

The prices in Denmark has went up 30-40% most places. I glad that I don't need to bye RAM right now. 192 MB must be more than enough ------------------ IP: Logged |

Sometimes it's better to act than wait, because you never know how things are tomorrow... Hopefully this everlasting price rise is not, well, neverending... The place whose prices I quoted yesterday had its memory prices increased by 100mk ($18) today, again. Mr. Postman, or should call you Per, we have this guy at work who had his machines memory upgraded from 256MB to 512MB and he's still complaining all the time (he still gets out-of-memory errors etc.) So there PS. I still wonder how one of my pals knew this all beforehand, you see he got his 64 meg stick just before the price wars for 450mk (now 900mk)... IP: Logged |

Akma, what is that dude doing with his machine? Hopefully it isn't normal office work Imagine a document eating up 512 MB RAM, thats got to be a HUGE (properly also boring ) one. Feel free to call me Mr. Postman or Per or Postmand_Per or whatever you want. As long as you aren't offending me I don't care ------------------ IP: Logged |

It is Office work (with a capital O meaning Microsoft Office). It's like he's creating these product manuals with N meg targa images in them with Word. When he's printing after one or two pages he get's an error like 'Unable to print, Word has ran out of memory, Please close some applications and try again'. Poor lad! IP: Logged |

Heh, I have to compile Half-Life maps (me being the mapper) and I've had to keep raising my virtual memory (now @ 800MB) ! I only have 128MB of memory so when I get about 9% into the compiling process my HD trashes like crazy. After that I have to start up HL; more thrashing. Exit HL; even more thrashing. Get back into WorldCraft and search through a gazillion textures; you guessed it thrashing to the extreme! I only hope that whatever memory goes into the Athlon mobo's will be cheap so I can buy a bucket-full of it and not have to worry about my HD crashing and going through hell trying to ressurect it cause I didn't get to back-up my map because of my HD crashing! Akma, poor guy. Making manuals has to be boring (especially when they are that large). MeenMunky, Current Athlon motherboards support PC100 RAM and new ones will also support PC133 and maybe DDR RAM also (not sure about that). ------------------ IP: Logged |

I was somewhat smart enough to buy the memory for my upcoming Athlon system (arriving within the next weeks) a week ago... Prices are 330.- CHF (Switzerland) for a 128 MB SDRAM module (PC199, 8 ns, generic brand)... That's 220$ IP: Logged |

Do you know anything about the compiling process? I'm making HL maps based on the Quake 2 engine. They are not Unreal maps which are already "compiled". In Unreal lighting is done in game. Whearas in Quake 2 engine maps the lighting is already pre-rendered. During the compiling process all of the tools work their magic. QSCG checks the geometry. QBSP2 checks for leaks. VIS checks where lighting should go. Finally QRAD calculates thhe light values. When QRAD takes the helm this is when my HD trashes since it has to calculate all of the aspects of light. What color it should be, brightness, how far it goes, how many times it bounces, where the polygons stop it, all of that and more, and since it had to keep all of that information in the memory for future reference, such as the lighting values and colors so it can blend them later on, my 128MB system can't hold it all and dumps it on the HD. The reason the maps are about 1MB is because of the compile, so it can be downloadable, and your machine won't have to calculate the lighting in "real-time" which in Quake 2 engine games would slow down the game to a snails pace. BTW I have to keep WorldCraft open (WordCraft being the program I use to make maps) so I can quickly edit the maps. And World Craft eats RAM for Breakfast, Dinner, and Lunch. Not to mention that sometimes I use Wally to create textures and since it's basically an image manipulation program that eats up my RAM too. IP: Logged |

Well, I have never maked any maps myself so I have no idea about how demanding it can be, I'll just play the game (it kick some serious ass ). I just think it sound wired that it could use so many ressources.... ------------------ IP: Logged |

The 64MB stick costs 1500mk ($265) today. Maybe the voting should be about just the memory prices. What is your pain threshold for buying a of stick memory? The memory price rise was noted also in yesterdays main news broadcast here. They told the population something we 'nerds' already knew, the earthquake would make the prices of other computer bits and pieces to go up as well along with the memory prices that have been in an up motion since July. For your record a 64MB stick did cost 300mk in early July. Boy if I only had purchased a bunch of them then. Now I'd be a rich man... IP: Logged |

Last Saturday I bought 64Mb PC100 for my parents PC from Tech Direct (UK) In their catalogue for this month (which was 3 weeks old at the time) the list price was £27.01 inc VAT. That's almost quadrupled the price in 1 month! ------------------ IP: Logged |
