I would be grateful if anyone could give me a few reference marks for the normal temperature of an AMD K6-2 3DNow! processor.

My 475MHz (overclocked to 504MHz) is stable but I still worry about the temperature - we don't have aircon over here in the UK.

Its currently at 45C, is this good or bad ?(system shows as as 38C)

PS. It drops 2C when I stop seti@home, LOL

AFAIK the K6 core is specified up to 65 C, my K6-III frequently reaches 52-55 C when overclocked (but the damn thing is not very stable without extra case fanning, I only do it to benchmark en par with the Celeron 450)

Secondly your system temperature should stay below 50 C as that may be hot enough to get secondary devices to fail, i.e. your harddisk.

my K6-III 400 runs at 45C for days now. No problems or weird stuff yet.

Make sure u feel that the heatsink gets hot, if it doesnt u need apply thermal paste between heatsink and cpu.

My K6-2-266 clocked to 350 runs at 48°C (Asus P5A-B). My K6-III-400 also runs at 48°C.

I also have a K6-233 which ran at 68°C when clocked to 250MHz. You could easily cook eggs on it.

My K6-2 400 runs normally between 47-52C on my Asus P5A. Of course, there's a Voodoo3 3000 cooking under it, so that may have something to do with the constantly high temps.

My K6-2 350MHz (o/c to 448) runs at 40°C with 2.5V. Only using normal fan.

40°C? You're living on the Artic Circle? I can't make my K6-III 400 go 450 even... My processor runs at 48°C with 2.4V and a big heat sink. Maybe I should keep the window open at winter when it's -20°C outside...

Speaking of temperatures, does anyone know the temp thresholds on an Athlon? I'm sure everyone's seen the monstrous heatsinks they slap on those bad boys.

"AMD Athlon™ Processor Thermal Solution Application Note" (document #22439) has this to say:

"The AMD Athlon™ processor operating specification calls for the plate temperature to be in the range of 0°C to 70°C. The ambient temperature is not specified as long as the plate temperature is not violated."

Hey, thanks a bunch Akma. 70C? Not too bad! Those engineers at Fab25 really outdid themselves this time.

Hi, the K6-2 AFQ is rated up to 65 degrees celsius. The AFR is rated up to 75 i think. Most of them are AFQs as far as I know. My K6-3 472 never gets over 50 degrees, and sits at almost exactly 39.8 degrees (its at 2.5 volts).

43-48 is as good as I can get out of my K6-2-400. Gets about 55C at 450.

It's in a full tower case running S@H 24/7, along with a heap of additional card (Network, sound etc), and 1 10.2GB HDD. I have a cooling fan at the bottom of the case bowing air into the case. No exhaust fan (Yet) at the top, although there is room for one.

Looks like 46C for my 475MHz is about par for the course then. I've also experimented with using heat transfer compound (a real thin layer) but it doesn't make any discernable difference.

Looks like if I want to o/c any higher I'm going to have to wait for winter !

Glad I found this thread! I recently overclocked my K6/2 350 to 400 and it is rock solid at 46C. Was a little leary about going higher, but after reading comments here I think it is worth a shot.

My wife's K6/2 266 @ 300 is only running at 33C. Of course that sucker has one hugh heatsink on it. Probly should take it and put it on mine.

Well, switched heatsinks between the machines. Now mine runs at 40C and the wife's is at 37C. No luck getting either one to clock faster though. Only went as high as 2.8V. Thought anything higher would be a bit risky.

I have a K6-2 400. When I bought it, the max temperature (runing Prime95)was around 60ºC. After some 'modifications' it´s runing a 504 MHz and the temp is never over 50ºC. The ambient temperature is around 30ºC.

I have an Asus P5A (rev 1.04), and the temp showed by the bios (and by the Asus program) is aproximately 5ºC more than the real.

Is there anyone who can say a way to measure cpu-temperature, if my motherboard has no monitoring of cpu temperature on-board.

I'm sure using the usual home termometer is not a good idea... but what else?

Once again on behalf of everybody who's been fooled by that thing, it's your personal status and has nothing to do with your computer. It's just a way the arministrator uses to trick you post more...

Akma,

Is there anyway to get a list of the current ranks (ie Celeron Worshipper) ?

Well, that should be asked from the Arministrator. But let me guess anyway

User (10 posts or less) is a Celeron Worshipper
User (at least 11 posts) is a Follower of Athlon
Moderator is a Priest of Athlon
Armin(istrator) is a High Priest of Athlon

Personally I would like there to be several user ranks starting from Athlon 500 and going up 50MHz at a time (after 25 more posts). But you can't have everything, I can...

I have my K6-2 475 o/c to 504 (4.5x112), wih a huge 3DFX Cooler sink/fan, 2 case fans, and paste. With S@H running 24/7, I've never seen it go over 37C.
