Someone asked about the mp3 encoding performance of the Athlon (couldn't find the thread so new one here).

I ripped a 7 minute 48 second piece and encoded it to 16 bit 128 kbit/s with Xing's mp3 encoder 1.0 in 34 seconds.

Excuse me, but are you sure it was an AMD Athlon and not Cray X-MP?

My, oh my...

It takes my K6-III 400 68 seconds to encode a 4 minute song (CD quality, 128 kbit/s). That's not too bad either.

That Xing mp3 encoder is a great piece of software, my K62-350 will do a 5 min song in about 2min or less, sure beats anyother encoder i have tried.

but WHO can tell the difference between 160K and 192K. i can understand between say 96 and 128 but anything afterthat is really just wasted in my opinion.

For most pc users, higher than 128k may be a bit of a waste without a digital setup or a really good set of audio equipment.

My friend is doing music production on his system, when he finishes a song it is fully digital music, when he is has done his final stereo mixdown and then encodes it to a mp3 at 192k or higher it retains the digital pureness of the music, and as he has his pc routed thru his studio the sound difference is audible.

He also makes backups of some of his .wav's by encoding them to mp3 at full digital fidelity and then stores them on his adat.
a single song can be more than 1 gig in size.

It seems to work pretty good and saves gigs of hard drive space.

Until he gets the CD-RW this is the best way to do it.

Hmm--I prefer this little program called Electronic Cosmo's MPEG Suite. The encoder is ultra fast! I just encoded a 9:11 song in around a minute, +-10 seconds. I'm running an Athlon 550 w/128MB RAM. As a side note, I just picked up a Kenwood TrueX 52x CD-ROM to replace the one I just fried for ultra-cheap, and it is FAST! And please, no one tell me I should have gotten a DVD...1) I don't buy enough movies to warrant a switch to DVD, and 2) this thing is much faster than a DVD in reading

MPEG Suite is what I use as well.

Heck, if you want the best quality, then don't compress your WAVes at all. The idea behind mp3 is not the quality, but the compression!

When I had just a one gig hard disk, I used to use 56kbps (22.05kHz, 16 bits, stereo). With my lousy setup I couldn't hear much of a difference between 112/128kbps and I could save 50% space

One of my pals said my 56kbps mp3s sounded crap and at a later date when I was visiting him, I could really hear it myself (must have been the ambience [or something] in his stereo, with that switched off it was better )

using the Xing AudioCatalyst ripping the complete cd (counting crows, recovering the satellites) (see cddb archive for more info).

ca.us.cddb.com

It took about ten minutes ripping the whole cd at 160k (inculding getting the tracks to the hd 1st (which happened at app. 16 speed).

Pieter
