My system is also recognized as a Pentium 2 MMX when I am using a K6-2! Is that some kind of joke? :-) Is Quake III even optimized for 3DNow?

Have you checked the date on that?

Feb 11th 1999. Thats ... well ... nearly a full year ago. Does anyone think they've forgotten by now? Probably.

My guess is that AMD might be doing the optimisations as they did with Quake II. I'll see what I can find out about it.

On a side point, the reason 3dnow caught on so well in the first place was that people could use relatively cheap processors (K6-2's at the time) to play a demanding game they couldnt otherwise play. Quake III is playable on even a K6-II 300 with something as old as a voodoo II (Just about all graphics cards these days have 3dnow! drivers).

Anyway, the point that im trying to make is that 3dnow! optimisation is now no longer needed to PLAY the game, but to make the game run faster.

I didn't check the date on the announcement. I just saw it while I was searching for something different. But Q3 is also listed on the page where all 3DNow! enabled products is, so I guess it means that it has some sort of optimization in it.
