I've heard people say Line-ix (long i), and there's Lin-ix (short i). How do you pronounce it? IP: Logged |

I would have thought it was LINE-UX, as it is named after it's creator Linus Torvalds (I may have spelt the surname wrong!) Surely Linus would be LINE-US, not LINNUS.... IP: Logged |

Since Linus is scandinavian you'll pronounce his name "germanish", which would be LEE-NUZ, hence Linux is IMHO supposed to be pronounced LEE-NUCKS IP: Logged |

O.k. if you go to most of the linux sites, you'll be able to find a file called english.au. (its even on most distros CD, I think). and there linus will pronounce it how he does. btw, I pronounce it linucks. Colin IP: Logged |

I was promptly corrected by a friend when I mistakenly pronounced it as LINE-X. I tend to think he is correct since he and a couple of other fiends have used it for quite a while. dethrai woo-hoo...just reinstalled Wine-doze 98. IP: Logged |

Yeah, I read in one of the do it yourself type thingies for linux that it is LIN-UCKS Although I think LINE-UX in my head, and even say LINE-UX alot, whenever I say LIN-UCKS people say "What the hell is that" and when I repronounce it "LINE-UX" they say "Oh......! LINE-UX!! DUH!" I think the majority of people who arn't in the know are starting to say LINE-UX, so hopefully it will go that way to please the masses. I personally think it should be like Unix. There is the long U in Unix like "YOUNICKS". If we said it the Linux way it would be "UN-NICKS"with a short u. How stupid does that sound? So linux should be in parity with Unix. Say it the Unix way, do it right. ;-P IP: Logged |

Duh! English is so stupid 'cause you every letter has n different pronounciations. Thus I was born in Finland. In Finnish you pronounce each letter the same way every time. That rulez! I pronounce Linux like it's spelled ie. the 'i' is a short letter 'e' and the u is a short letter 'u' as in 'out'. But hearing is believing they say, so I recorded myself saying the word. That's the best way to find out how I pronounce it. [This message has been edited by Akma (edited September 02, 1999).] IP: Logged |

So you say "Leenooks". I think Line-ucks or line-ux (pronounced the same) sound more streamlined and less... well, weird. IP: Logged |
