In response to Armin Lenz's editorial located at http://fullon3d.com/opinionated / I wrote the following letter to Mr. Lenz, his reply has been posted on the bottom. Please post your opinions on this subject, whether there should be a petition, maybe a formal withdrawal by Team 3DNOW! or just vent any pent up anger you might have about this.

I would like to personally thank you for the editorial you wrote about the Seti@HOME project. I was aware of some of the facts you touched on but definitely not all of them. I think you must have based your example on me because I have let my computer (both of them) run through the night in
an attempt to help the world of science (well actually AMD and 3DNOW!, but....). Anyway as for idealism I bought an AMD chip last summer simply to fight the WINTEL monopoly so I'm not short in the idealism
category. But where I am short is in the patience category where I can't stand it when as you but it they "make you build a road with your bare hands." I am a college student seeking a possible career in the aerospace industry because ever since I saw Star Wars I wanted to go to space and I
thought I could help it right now in my own little way. Now I find out that they very people that want to be there also will not change their operation because it might hurt their pride a little to say that "we quoofed." You mentioned that we the artcipants shouldn't be angry because we were not promised anything, well I AM! I don't like to be told "your childhood idealism is great you have to look at the real world situations, there are real egos that are in serious danger here and if we
aren't careful they might become extinct." If you're starting up a "Make Seti@HOME Better" petition please let me put my John Hancock right where they can see it!

Jeffrey Smith

Jeffrey,

You're welcome .. I too run my boxes day and night to get the team forward and it ticks me off to suffer the extra heat in my bedroom during a heatwave like we currently have, as well as the noise of 3 harddisks and 6 fans running all the time.

I'd appreciate if you cared to post your thoughts here on the message board for the article so the SETI@Home folks can read it too, since it is them we need to convince - you're preaching to the choir with me

A.

I decided for myself to pause my SETI@Home submissions for the time being until they improve their efficiency. I am now running the RC5 on the Celeron 450 (31 minuts/block) and the K6-III/400 (1 hour/block) so I'll make it back to 3rd place on the team

I am currently building a cheap SMP machine for Linux based off 366 MHz Celerons (yeah I know but there is no AMD SMP box out yet and I doubt they want to give me one for $350 once they got it finished), which I will then decide for what to run, SETI or RC5 .. I think from the memory speed aspect it would be good for SETI.

My letter to David Anderson (S@H project guy):

His response:

"Going down"? "second rate"? Lighten up, dude.
