Akma Follower of Athlon	posted August 16, 1999 16:06 I sent the following email to Dan Werthimer of Seti@Home considering the 3DNow! optimized version of Seti@Home: Hello. I am a member of the Seti@Home team called Team 3DNow! (which has over 260 members). I, like many of my team members, have a processor with 3DNow! technology. There has been a discussion in the 3DNow! community about a 3DNow! optimized version of Seti@Home. There are many of us who would like to see such a version of Seti@Home. The community has shown will to create one for the benefit of all the 3DNow! users of the Seti@Home project. The only thing that has been missing is the green light from Seti@Home staff. Rumour has it that you would not like to see a 3DNow! optimized version, because it would be too efficient and it would make your servers even more crowded than they are today. On my opinion, such a version would be good for Seti@Home, because I, like many of my team members, am involved with other similar projects as well, such as RC-5. A 3DNow! optimized version would enable me (and any 3DNow! user to that matter) to use my computer more efficiently and would mean I would not have to keep my computer running 24 hours a day for it to process one Seti@Home unit. After all, there are us who run Seti@Home constantly and not only as a screensaver. We do not care so much of the fancy graphics than the results. I would also have more CPU time to run RC-5. If Seti@Home indeed is afraid of their servers overcrowding with users packets, per-user limits could be introduced. For example, you could only receive one new packet per week. There is no reason to punish 3DNow! enabled users by making them to use an unefficient client that could easily be optimized for their specific hardware by knowledgeable volunteers. And besides, that would give the Seti@Home project a well-deserved face-lift among the 3DNow! users where there has been spreading nasty rumours about Seti@Home project and its unwillingness for optimizations. Anyway, thank you for the project. It is a perfect way for that small person in this vast universe to feel they are helping a good cause. Let us together build up a better tomorrow. They want do their optimized client without help, or the feelling of loosing control over the things... Well 'until the end of the year' is very vague/long time-limit... Better late than never ?
