im having a lan party tomarrow, so my buddy brought me his pc with a amd 450mhz. naturly i couldnt help but put seti on it. 1st unit took 21 hours, so i made some changes to it. (with his permision) i changed the memory to cas2, turbo, frontside bus to 115mhz x 4.0 multiplier, loaded new ali drivers, win98se, and setk6-2 and still cannot get it under 20hrs a unit. is this normal for asus? it has 256mb pc100, 10gig ultradma hd, voodoo2 1k, soundblaster 32. i ran sisoft sandra, cpu, memory and multimedia benchmarks on par with my own amd 450mhz system. i did the alt ctr del thing, and there are no tasks running in the background. i see no jumpers for memory speed in the manual. all caches are emabled in the bios. i also set it up as a server in system properties. this has me puzzled. my 450 amd on a fic 503+ does a unit in 16&1/2 hrs while running a win modem, surfing, and checking my mail every 60secinds. if im missing something here, please let me know. thanks.

Thats the same board as i have, only mine is ATX rev1.04 using bios 1007.
P5A-B is the AT version but i don't see how that could make a difference.

New BIOS files are here: http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/bios_socket7.html
New ide drvers and agp drivers are here: http://www.ali.com.tw /

The newest version of his bios should have a "allow write allocate" line in the bios, you could double check that it is enabled.
My 6 2 350@400 with ver20 was down to 17hrs, i can't figure out what you may have missed if anything.

I have all of my powermanagement disabled in the bios but no special settings, and his has double the ram i have, i do know i am using all of the newest drivers.

Hey, since i got the K6 III 400 in there i am into the low 14hrs per unit, i think i can break into the 13's .

If i think of anything i'll message you.

John

ok, i got brave, my buddy said flash, did version 1007 then 1008, all went well, went to bios, and set it all up, but still no speed improvement, but it does recognize it as 460mhz now, instead of 400.

Just a thought, you may want to try it with 128MB or less. As the Ali chipset has a max cachable memory area of 128MB, so with 256MB I presume it would reduce the memory performance.
Since most of the data will miss L1 and L2 cache, its being fetched from main memory. So anything reducing main memory speed should have a significant effect on seti.

Hope this helps.

My brothers also have a p5a-b and k6 233mhz with 66mhz fsb, and can do a unit in 24hrs. So over 24hrs for a 450 with 100mhz fsb seems slow.

p.s. I've just caved in and ordered an Athlon 600 with the MSI board, so I should have a few more units coming soon, just waiting on the board (1 week?).

Mort you hit the nail on the head. i took out 128mb, and seti has started speeding up quickly. unfortunatly im in the 19th hour right now, so ther next unit will show better results. thankyou for the tip, and nice to hear from you. oh, and great to hear your getting a athlon. i hope to get mine soon, but things have come up in the family, and it may be delayed for a week or so.

glad it worked fredro

Kryo-900, you probably know more about this than me, but if your running win9x then more than 128MB seems to slow the system down. If you're not running win9x then just ignore me.

Good call Mort.

Some of the newer Asus P5A's Asus went as far as adding a 10Mbit tag ram chip to the board to allow it to address upto 256mb of ram.

I didn't know that windows98 has problems with more than 128mb of ram.

Looks like fredros friend has got some ram for sale...hahaha

I finally found where I got this from. There was an article in the August 1999 edition of PCW (UK), about memory. It in there is a table showing RAM performance results in SYSmark98 as follows:

cpu=300mhz fsb=100mhz
32mb 100
64mb 107
96mb 108
128mb 109
160mb 106
192mb 103
224mb 100
256mb 94

Looking at the article now it does seem sus, with only SYSmark 98 used, and that they do not give the specs of the system that the benchmarks came from. So other factors apart from win98 could come into effect, such as only the first 128mb of memory being the cachable limit for the motherboard, or a crap benchmark.

I should have realised, any program/data too large for 128mb would take longer due to disk read/writes, e.g. worldcraft compile, esp. QRAD.

Thanks for putting doubts in my head about this, i'll know better in future.

I thought they had run the tests on various OS's and found win98 to max out, in performance terms at 128mb, bad memory, sorry about that.

Fredro, I've a P5A rev. 104, BIOS 1007, K6-2 400 AFQ, 128 Mb SDRAM PC100, and I've discovered that this board is faster at 112 MHz than at 115. For example Quake III Arena (1.09, demo version, demo002):
115*4 - 31.8 fps
112*4 - 33.7 fps

I've more results of other benchmarks. I you want them, just tell me. I think you must try 112*4 or even 105*4,5.
