Ok, someone give me a hint or two here. I'm trying to get the SETI@Home clint running on a machine that's just had Corel Linux installed. I downloaded the setiathome-2.0.i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1-static.tar and ran tar xvf on it, all done as root. I now have a directory (setiathome-2.0.i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1-static) with a readme and an ELF 32-bit executable called setiathome. This machine is connected to the Internet through a local network and the server is 169.254.0.11. I got Netscape and the newsreader working fine through the proxy (and, of course, downloaded the seti client). The only way I seem to be able to launch the setiathome progrma is through the Corle File Manager, which is fine except that it doesn't know how to reach the Internet. I cannot launch the client from the Bash console, it simply says 'setiathome unknown command'. I *think* I got a global environment variable set up called HTTP_PROXY=169.254.0.11:80 by placing that line in the /etc/profile file. In any case, it doesn't work. help! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'd love to do just thatbut I have no idea from -where- I can. Bash won't run it period and when I launch it from the Corel File manager, there are no options to feed it command-line paramaters. I need more detailed blow-by-blow instructions ------------------ IP: Logged |

which mode u using it X or console ? if console goto the seti directory (CD) and do chmod setiathome +x how to get to console: since im running another version of Linux and think u should learn about linux its your study project, meaning u try and acces helpfiles or local how to documentation. Sometimes the version of linux allows a right click on the desktop which will offer a menu and an to execute command, i think the name is "term" that u should use in there. ------------------ Pieter :*) IP: Logged |

One would assume that if the Corel File Manager can recognize an executable (setiathome) for what it is and launch it, you should not need to take elaborate steps (chmod) to make that possible under the Bash shell, eh? In any case, I'll try the chmod command tonight. Corel Linux boots to Xwindows only but then you can open a console window (Bash). ------------------ IP: Logged |

well these sorta things are a bit weird, but in a shell u can get most things to work, seti doesnt have a gui interface except for the Xwindows counterpart (i think). regards, Pieter IP: Logged |

I've run SETI on several different versions of Linux and Unix, using bourne, bash, and C shells. What I usually do is create a directory for SETI in /usr/share/seti. I then place setiathome in /usr/bin, that way it is in your path statement, and can be run from anywhere. I then use a script called multiseti.pl to queue three days worth of units, which is totally optional. To get SETI to run, just cd to /usr/share/seti. Then type "setiathome -proxy 169.254.0.11:80", if you have a http proxy. It should then work in your bash shell. IP: Logged |

Well, chmod setiathome +x was an invalid command but when I put setiathome in the /usr/bin directory and created a /usr/seti directory it ran fine. Perhaps Bash looked at setiathome in a different light since it was in the path now? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I just wanted to clarify a couple of things for you, Burm. For the chmod command to work you would need to type "chmod +x setiathome". The setting change has to be before the name of the file that is being changed. Also, you can get setiathome to run, even if it is not in your command path. If an executalbe is not in your path, then you would have to either go to the directory where the program is at and type "./[name of the executable]", ie., "./setiathome", or type in the full path to the executable to run it, ie., "/usr/share/seti/setiathome". I hope this gives you a better understanding of Linux. If you have any other questions about Linux or Unix, I would be glad to try and answer them for you. IP: Logged |

Well, It's chugging along nicely now and I probably won't touch the machine for weeks at a time. I'm not so much interested in developing my Linux skills at this time as getting the most SETI bang for the buck. The Athlon 550 running Corel Linux is now nearly pacing the Athlon 700 running Win98SE at just under 8 hours a unit. ------------------ IP: Logged |
