I ran a unit last night on the TBird 1000 and it took 6 hours 27 minutes. That, I think, is telling regarding the limitation through the RAM, since it is not a bit faster than the 900 or old 1000.

One result under 6 (5.952 to be precise) on my 800 MHz. That's using the SETI text version. Almost every other under 7 hrs as long as I play NO games whatsoever.

Fredo, Intel, do either of you mess with voltage in overclocking your Athlons? I get about one blue screen a day @bus 106 no voltage change on win98se.

I am Mr. UltraSuperPsycoOverclockerMan so to burn my Athy in i had it at 1.95v for a while. Now i have it sitting at 1.75v. It needs a little more because its a genuine 550mhz core (i didnt get lucky and get a 650) running at 749mhz. It also is my most stable system. My bus is at 107/214mhz and my multiplier is at 7 with 1/2 cache (374.5mhz).

Ooh, 7hr times and I was impressed recently when my times dropped from 24hr to 18-20hr times. In a couple weeks I hope to replace this k6-2 500 with a Duron 600@900. I hope to be joining the <7hr club soon!

sno, are you running anything in the background, such as anti virus software? perhaps you are runing a screensaver? are you running the text version, or the gui? all of these have a impact on seti.

yes run the win nt version. it should shave quite a bit of time. if i remember right, i think it is a hour faster on my athlon than the gui.

i just ran into a problem while trying to install the winnt text version.. it gave me some stupid error message with a title or error starting program

The C:\SETIATHOME-2.4.ALPHA-WINNT-CMDLINE.EXE file was not compiled for a cpu that is compatible with this version of Windows. Contact your vendor for a newer version

the other box that comes up with that error box says

Windows cannot run this program because it is an invalid format.

So now what do i do?

I think the version you got is for Alpha CPUs. Try to get hold of the "i386" version

i was reading version 3.0 is expected to be 40 to 50% slower than 2.4
seti`s server is so bogged down they had to do something, so if they slow the client down, lose a few thousand people, then they can keep up. use the excuse that they are digging deaper into the work unit, and most of the die hard seti crunchers fall for it. i myself will move on to a different project if my computers cannot crunch as fast as they currently are.

Well, sitting the fence of not wanting to discourage the SETI team, you'd all be more than welcome in defeating Poland on Gamma Flux and the follow-up projects at DCypher, as well as to participate in the upcoming paid projects at ProcessTree.

Can't you just use an older version? I only began using 2.04 of the Win9x client a month or so ago. Up until then I was using the previous version(I heard that 2.04 was slower).

If SETI makes clients that are slower just for them to keep up i will not be putting forth as much of an effort as fredro has said.

I am going to put out some gamma flux units for Armin as it would be nice to flatten Poland in the stats

we will just have to see what happens. maybe we will get lucky and still be able to use the old 2.0 and 2.4 versions. they said we couldnt use the 1.6 version when 2.0 came out, but just last week i downloaded a work unit for 1.6, although i didnt waste my cpu time on it.

Update: I put together my Duron sys yesterday. It consists of a Duron650 and A7V and generic hs/fan(to be replaced by an Alpha 6035). I didn't go for the 600@900 deal, so I'll see what this 650 can do after the Alpha arrives(could be a month for stock to come in). The Duron is unlocked so that's good news.

Anyway, so far at 650 I seem to be getting 10hr/wu results with the Win9x 2.04 client. I suppose I should try the NT client and see what happens.

I think this is the first time I have ever disagreed with any of you. When 3.0 comes out I will still crunch WU. I know many of you do this as a competition, but I am in it mostly for the possibility (how ever small) of finding a signal somewhere out there. I could care less if it takes one month per WU to crunch. If Berkeley says they want to “dig deeper” then I believe them. Yes, they could be lying, but I'm willing to take that chance. I also think that if they are going to "dig deeper" that they SHOULD use SSE and 3dnow. There are thousands of programmers that would be willing to help. Taking the BSD attitude and being a code snob doesn't help out the project any. If they are that overburdened then they should ask for help. The world will unite and give it to them.

Ok...I'm off my soapbox now.
