I've got four Compaq Deskpro ENs at work that I use to crunch WU (why not). There are all 400-450Mhz PII with 196 MB of RAM. For some reason I get 9 hours or less per WU. Most run in the mid 8s. Why? I though the TBIRDS were only running about 7.5 or so. Is something out of whack here. You'd think I'd be getting 11s or so. Any ideas, or is this normal? I've got a whole farm of servers at my disposal on the weekend, I just haven't done so yet. I fell so dirty using Intel chips I'd like to see what those PII Xeon are capable of doing. IP: Logged |

i'm using a pII Xeon 500 1 mb cache( with 512 mb mem ) and it's doing a wu in about 4.5 hours. seems to me seti likes a lot of memory bandwith, so i'm couriouse wath a tbirt with ddr ram will do ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think these are the 1 meg also. They could be the 2 meg though. This used to be our Oracle cluster, but it's being retired. They just bought a BIG alpha (tru64) machine to replace them. So now I have (2) two processor PII Xeon 400 (I believe). Each node has over a Gig of RAM....can't wait to sneak seti on them. Only 8 hours left 'till I get to try [This message has been edited by Jayden (edited August 25, 2000).] IP: Logged |

I used to run PII 400 @ 560 MHz and it does WU in about 6.2 hrs. I think it is mainly the old clients being more Intel friendly (or at least chipset wise), liking 512 kb of L2 cache more than 256, the higher FSB (140 MHz) and more importantly the faster memory performance, and the BX chipset. Of course, this will all become sorta meaningless once the new client comes out. Memory performance, high FSB and only having 256 kb (and I guess 128 kb) of L2 cache will be concerns of the past. PS. Hey Fredo. Remember me? [This message has been edited by NiteOwl (edited September 14, 2000).] IP: Logged |
