The message stating that a new version of SETI@home is now available, and that you must download it to continue to run SETI@home.

It isn't stated on the SETI website that it is required. So what should I do? Wait until I can't download new WU's with SETI ver 3.00 and then upgrade?

Ok here is the deal. Seti 3.XX adds a new type of analysis from and uses a more efficient algorithm from 2.X. 3.XX is now required for the few people still running 1.X. They can't get WU's. Users can still use 2.X but they won't be looking for triplets and will be a little slower. 3.00 was OK, but it had a few bugs, so they came up with 3.01. Then Berkley realized that Seti was using over a third of the University's bandwidth and clogging their network. Most of that traffic is in the form of outgoing WU's. The solutions proposed were either cut back on WU's sent out or pay for more bandwidth. (Seti@home does not pay Berkley for bandwidth as of yet and most likely can not afford to.)

Right now Seti@home users provide more processing power than really needed. Users crunch more WU's than are generated by the radio telescope data tapes. Because there are more users than WU's, Seti recycles work units and sends them out to multiple users. WU's are being processed 4-5 times. This is a waste of resources. The chance of error is small in each processed WU and statistical tools can be used to overcome that.

The decision was made to better utilize processing power by doing a more detailed mathematical analysis of each WU. Basically they expanded the wavelength analyzed. That is what 3.03 is. WU's under 3.03 take almost 30% longer than with 3.01 but you do more science. Since each WU takes longer, Seti sends out fewer recycled work units. This means less Berkley bandwidth used, and more science done. To them this is a win win situation.

So yes, right now you can use 3.00 and get credit. Your times will be faster, but you won't be doing as much actual science. To me science is the point. If you want to rack up stats, stay with 3.00 or 3.01. If you want to do real work, run 3.03. This is what Berkley and Seti@home wants you to do, but is up to you, for now.

I'll use version 3 of the cmdline until I can't d/l WU's with it. (I have 929 WU completed so far)

It seems that version 3.03 is now required. Unless its because of the power issue in California, I was able to upload the results, but couldn't download any WU's for ver 3.00 of SETI. I couldn't really see what it says before it exits, but it appears the first three words are "No data available"

I run 3.03 and I have had some problems getting new work units early this week. Like you described, takes the results but doesn't give WU's. Berkley has been haveing router problems. Also rember the above lecture about bandwidth. It is causeing conections to drop. You can check the status of the server at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/sstatus.html

Well for one thing, I had no problem downloading a WU with ver 3.03 at the same time.

Oh, and now I can download a WU with 3.00 with no problem.
