In another thread Dan asked me if I had ever tried over clocking my 600 MHz Athlon. I Thought I'd heat things up by stating my views on the topic in a new thread. I tinkered with it a little bit and my machine became slightly unstable when I raised the bus speed above 106. This translated to 636 MHz. To me, 36 MHz was not worth the trouble, so I took it back down to the original 600. I do believe if I changed the core voltage, I could receive much greater gains. Then of course there is cooling and GFD's. You all know the drill. Everything about this system says it would be a great over clocker if I went to the trouble. WARNING! Wordy Savine-bable Follows Personally I have decided I have more meaningful things to do with my life. It is interesting to me that most people judge the success of over clocking by how well their machine runs Quake. Truth is most over clocking is done on a hobby basis to gain greater performance in game play. Minor instability is not an issue or even noticeable in most of these situations. Seti@home may be a big horse, but do you run it run in a high stakes race with other big horses? I use my computer to chop wood and carry water. Other OC'ed machines I've used do not stand up to my needs. I am more concerned with my ability to run multiple heavy apps at demand. At times I run Excel spread sheets with 1000+ line items in conjunction with Power Point and some minor apps (read Seti) in the background. When Quake blue screens @ 3am the user loses the game and goes to bed. When business apps blue screen @ 3am Savine loses $$$ and stays up even later. This is not to say the fate of the world sits on my shoulders. I just have the speed I need and am more concerned with consistency. I compare the Athlon to the fabled 70's era Chevy small block engine. It is over built. Straight out of the factory it offers the consumer great performance for good value. If one knows how to tweak it in the right way, it can give much higher performance. If one tweaks it the wrong way, the impact can be significant and expensive. Thus the consumer has choice. Hot Rod building is a great hobby if you have the time and want use your car to cruise the local strip. However if you need your car to go to work and take the kids to soccer practice, you might want to reconsider. Over clocking is also a hobby. There are other hobbies that interest me more. I have an Athlon 600, its been running at 750 or more since the day I got it. It will run for a while at 825 till heat gets the better of it but Overclocking this chip is safe and effective if you do it right. I also have an old PII-350 thats been running at 490 for almost a year with no downtime. It may burnout soon but a free 40% upgrade is definately worth having. I guess you were just unfortunate in your particular overclock attempt but dont dismiss it on the strengh of one experience IP: Logged |

I agree that overclocking can be a daunding affair, depending on the particular machine. I had 2 K6-2-400's with identical motherboards, memory, cooling fans & heatsinks etc. One would comfortably run at 450 only (4.5*100), while the other was very happy at 500 (5*100), or 504 (4.5*112). Temps never increased much over about 45-50C for the second chip when overclocked, while the first ran steady at 48C no matter what. I swapped things between the 2 PC's, but never found anything other than the chip itself was the limiting factor. I now just run the one chip (The second one that was overclocked), at 400 during summer, and 450 during winter. I never was real happy about changing core voltages etc to get the clock speed up, so just stuck with multiplier & bus speed increases. Now I have the Celeron 500, I'll have to get back into it to see what I can do with it - 75*7.5 would be nice I think, and from what I understand of Celerons's quite achieveable. Dave IP: Logged |
